1 and 1 Domain Setup

*You may find your registrar’s support team asking for an “IP Address” to attach the domain name. We use a cname record to attach domain names because using IP Addresses means a systems servers must remain the same and ours do not and flux with incoming traffic and other updates. To ensure domain names always work, please use a cname to attach the domain to your site. 

*If you have a custom email, this process will likely disconnect the email. Please be sure to check with your registrar to ensure it continues to work after this update.

Adding a Subdomain to Your 1&1 Account

First thing’s first: You’ll need to create a subdomain.

  1. Log in to your 1&1 account.
  2. Click Manage Domains under “My Domains”.
  3. Click the Actions icon next to the domain you want to create a subdomain for then select Manage Subdomains.
  4. Click the Add subdomain link.

  5. Enter the name of the subdomain you’d like to create and click the Save button. We suggest using www

Now that you have your subdomain set up, you can set up your CNAME.

Setting Up a CNAME in Your 1&1 Account

Once you have your subdomain set up (or if you’re using a root domain) follow these steps to set up your CNAME.

  1. Log in to your 1&1 account.
  2. Click Domains from the left side menu.
  3. Click Manage Domains under “My Domains”.
  4. Click Manage Subdomains under Details for the domain you’re using
  5. Scroll down to the Subdomain Overview and select the drop-down menu for the subdomain you’d like to edit.
  6. Select Edit DNS Settings.

  7. Double check that you are editing the correct subdomain by looking at the top of the page.
  8. Select ‘CNAME’ under ‘A/AAAA Records Addresses)
  9. Enter “carrot.com” for the Alias and check the “I am aware and accept that all current DNS settings, e-mail addresses and redirects will be disabled” box.
  10. Click “Save”.
  11. Click “Yes” to confirm that you want to modify the DNS settings.
  12. You’re done!

You will then want to set up a redirect for your domain so that both yourdomain.comand www.yourdomain.com can be used.

From the Control Panel Home page, select Domains in the left navigation.

Click the Gear icon next to the domain that you are setting up and select Adjust Destination in the drop down menu. 

Select Forward Domain.

Set the domain to forward to the www of your domain using http:// and then click SAVE.

*Do not enter your admin username.carrot.com URL here. Only enter your custom domain.*
