Reusable Blocks FAQ

Creating a Reusable Block

Most commonly, you’ll use the highlighting method to create a reusable block because it’s the most efficient. After all, if you’re intentionally creating a block that will be added to specific pages, don’t you want to save time by designing that block on a page you are adding it to so you don’t have to add it later?

Let’s say you want to add a call-to-action that you will provide a pre-listing inspection for all homes listed in the month of July. You can add a reusable block to make an alert for this.

  1. Select/highlight as many blocks that you’d like to include in your reusable block.
  2. Click on the three dots that appear in the toolbar.
  3. Click on Add to Reusable blocks.
  4. Give it a name.
  5. Click Publish to publish the reusable block.
  6. Save the page.

Creating reusable blocks with text only

You can get even fancier and add any combination of blocks as a reusable block. Simply build out the blocks you want on the page and use the same steps as above to save them.

Creating reusable blocks with media and color

You can also create these in the reusable block manager. Click this link to get started and choose the site to add the reusable block to.

Choosing the Correct Block

When highlighting blocks to make them reusable, you’ll want to ensure you are selecting the overall block that groups all the features. There are blocks like the columns block, cover block, form block, and others that contain grouped blocks and need to have the main block selected.

For example, if you want to add a reusable form block, make sure to select the whole group block and not only the form block inside. In any block, you can hover over the icon to select the parent block.

Note the icon change from a single doc to two cubes once the parent block is selected.

Editing Reusable Blocks

When you edit a reusable block, the change will be reflected in all the places where that reusable block was used. If you wish to update a reusable block on a specific page or post only, you can use the Convert to Regular Blocks option below.

You can edit the text of reusable blocks on pages the block is published to and your text changes will occur on every page the reusable block is published on.

If you want to update more than the text, you’ll want to do this in the reusable block manager. You can navigate there by clicking the “+” icon on the top left of your editor’s page, clicking Reusable, and scrolling to the end of the menu to “Manage all reusable blocks.” Click the title of the reusable block you want to edit and make any updates you want. Once done, click the Save button on the top right.

๐Ÿ’ก The reusable block manager is separate from your edit page. Please save any changes before navigating there to ensure you don’t lose your work.

Convert to Regular Blocks

When you want to edit one of your site’s reusable blocks but you don’t want to edit the entire block and have those changes displayed everywhere on the site, you can convert the reusable block to regular blocks when you’re editing the block on a page.

To do this:

  • add the reusable block to a page
  • select the reusable block
  • click Convert to Blocks in the tool bar

๐Ÿ’ก Any converted blocks that are added back as a reusable block are a new reusable block. Converting blocks will always treat the content as a new block and will not save changes to the previous reusable block the content was converted from.
